Silk Mill Studios is open July 4th - 12th* 11am - 5pm as part of Frome Open Art Trail and Frome Festival.

*excluding Monday 6th - some artists will be closed on different days, see the brochure for accurate info.

An exploration of silver, this informal group exhibition shows works in progress, displayed in the shared spaces indoors and outdoors. Artists will open their private studios to show their making spaces and a behind the scenes glimpse into their practice.

Update following the Western Warehouse fire

There was a major fire in the building adjacent to the Silk Mill, and the site was closed for 24 hours while the fire was put out and the police investigated. This means that the exhibition will be more rough and ready than planned. We’d always intended it to be an informal WIP showcase anyway.

About the exhibition

The works on show in the corridors and in the outside spaces are WIP responses to the theme of “Argentous”, meaning of silver - a mark of Frome Festival’s 25th anniverary.

Kate Keara Pelen and Bernard Charnley have fabricated a yarn and foil installation outside the building - with assistance from Linda Claridge. Kate Keara Pelen’s yarn installation continues up the main stairway of the building inside. Showing in the corridor spaces, jeweller Clare Lloyd has made headpieces from foil and silver, Linda Claridge has made pottery works including silver glazes, Jenny Raggett explores the science of silver with paintings, and gouache on foil. I (Jennifer Kyte) have collected a series of photographs exploring silver birch trees, and experimented with writing extracts from my stories on foil. Francoise Price has made illustrations in response to silver, as well as a fish motif. Painter Bernard Charnley reimagines a landscape that speaks to fracture, transformation and vulnerability, using silver foil, acrylic and ink.
